So the doctrine of Christ’s preexistence is not an end in itself; it is a means of understanding what it is about this man Jesus that has led Christians to conclude he is more than a man. This does not mean, however, that the doctrine of Christ’s preexistence is merely about the role he plays in God’s plan; it has to do with who Christ is, something we must establish before we can concern ourselves about what he does.4 It also is about what God is like, because denial of Christ’s preexistence entails
